I’ve taken on roles within the Progressive Players before and always had an amazing time. I’ve acted (most recently in Dancing at Lughnasa in February 2024), I had a marvellous role as text coach and Dramaturg for Rutherford and Son (April 2024), but when I started my first role as a co-director with Silhouette I had a few moments where I thought that I was totally out of my depth and questioned whether I could pull this off.
However, the community of the Progressive Players meant that every time I had one of those moments, or realised I just didn’t know something there has been a member there to provide advice, the benefit of their knowledge and affirmation. There are too many members to thank in a blog like this, but when you look at the programme this should give you a flavour of the support and team that goes into building one of our show weeks. I’m not sure I can get away with a line for special thanks for taking a call on Sunday afternoon when a plan for the set turned out not to work to answer the question “Can I hang a curtain from a lighting rig?” (It turns out the answer is yes) so I’m squeezing that particular thanks in here to represent all the ones I’d like to offer.
Silhouette is a dream of a show to do as a first-time Director because it has given me such a thorough grounding in every part of a building a show – with the benefit of a great story to go with it that’s a real honour to share with you, our audience. Murder mystery is a great tradition in the theatre and I can’t wait to see if you can guess whodunnit – all will be revealed at the very end!
